WYSO Weekend: October 27, 2019

Two weeks after Governor Mike DeWine unveiled his so-called 'Strong Ohio' gun control package, groups on both sides of the issue are ramping up the rhetoric. The plan disappointed many who wanted universal background checks and a law allowing judges to take guns from someone deemed a threat. DeWine called for both measures after the Oregon District mass shooting. Now, as Community Voices Producer Jason Reynolds reports for WYSO News, both sides are lobbying lawmakers as they weigh DeWine’s gun bill. 



Today on Dayton Youth Radio we have the first story from a new class of producers from Centerville High School.  Senior Lizzy Sparks tells us about an extraordinary meeting and eating pizza with someone very special .

The scene adaptation of William Peter Blatty's 1971 horror novel The Exorcist was released in 1973. Forty-six years later, the movie will serve as the maiden voyage film for the new Dayton Dinner Theatre, taking place in the historic Dayton Engineers Club.The dinner-and-a-show event is a collaboration between the Engineer’s Club and local entrepreneur, John Boucuvalas, who says the events are meant to bring people together. 


In rural areas, access to mental health services is very limited sometimes even more so for teens and children. And the need for these services is growing. Side Effects’ Carter Barrett reports how one Midwestern school is using technology to help bridge this gap.
