Swing with Bill Cartwright: 05.23.20

Originally aired on May 23, 2015:

This week's Swing with Bill Cartwrightshow begins with a musician whom I hadn't heard of...Will Bradley.  Born in 1912, he was a trombonist and band leader who went on to play with Johnny Carson's Tonight Show band.  Mr. Bradley's song, "Beat Me Daddy Eight to the Bar," is followed by vocalist Helen Ward and the big band of Artie Shaw.

Artie Shaw, who was born on May 23rd, 1910, was a rival of Benny Goodman's during the swing era.  There's a funny quote attributed to Mr. Shaw, "Benny Goodman played clarinet. I played music."

During the second half of the Swing program, you'll hear from Jimmy Dorsey, Charlie Burnett, and Glenn Miller.  The show ends with Lionel Hampton's "Red Top."
