The Waiting List For Affordable Housing Is Now Open

Families can now apply for affordable housing in Cincinnati but the window of opportunity is narrow.

The Cincinnati Metropolitan Housing Authority reopened its waiting list for its Housing Choice Voucher Program on Monday, September 9.

The waiting list is open through 11:59 p.m. on September 12. It's the first step in for low-income families to qualify for safe, affordable housing and the need is great.

The waiting list has not been open since 2017, and at that time CMHA got 14,000 applications. Only 6,500 spots were available. The Greater Cincinnati Coalition for the Homeless has cited statistics showing Hamilton County has a shortage of more than 40,000 affordable homes.

Joining Cincinnati Edition to discuss the waiting list and affordable housing in our area are Cincinnati Metropolitan Housing Authority Housing Choice Voucher Senior Program Manager Alicia Morlatt; and Senior Communications Coordinator Lesley Wardlow.

Listen to Cincinnati Edition live at noon M-F. Audio for this segment will be uploaded after 4 p.m. ET.
