Lights Return To Roebling Suspension Bridge
Just about the time most Halloween trick-or-treaters will be dumping their candy bags and checking their haul, lights will return to the Roebling Suspension Bridge. The bridge's "necklace lights" - the lights running along the cables - will illuminate at 8 p.m. Tuesday. They were extinguished last fall for repairs and upgrades.
"We upgraded 20 of [the lights] which were the closest to the roadway," says Mark Roberto, president of the . "We upgraded some of the electrical wiring and boxes and conduits and that kind of stuff... We notched it up to a higher level of safety."
Fundraising continues to upgrade electrical components on the rest of the 150-year-old Brooklyn Bridge predecessor's remaining cable lights. Roberto says the goal is to do that work in the next few years. The CCSBC is funded by donations.
Seven of the 76 necklace lights are still out and will be replaced in the spring, weather allowing.
The Suspension Bridge was named a National Historic Landmark in 1975.
