Cincinnati Public Schools Superintendent Mary Ronan has announced she will retire on Aug. 1, 2017.

Cincinnati Public Schools Superintendent Mary Ronan announced Thursday she will retire on August 1, 2017.

Her decision comes after the district successfully passed a new 7.93 mill operating levy two weeks ago that will help expand preschool.

Ronan will have served as the head of the district for nearly ten years when she retires.

"It has been an honor to serve Cincinnati Public Schools throughout my 40-year career as an educator, and I am grateful to our voters and partners for supporting the students and families of our community," said Ronan in a press release.

The Cincinnati School Board will launch a national search for a replacement. That begins with issuing a request for proposals next week to hire a search firm.

The board will consider both internal and external candidates.

"The selection of a superintendent is one of the most important responsibilities of any board of education," said board President Ericka Copeland-Dansby said. "Every member of the Cincinnati Board of Education is committed to finding a superintendent with the right expertise and skill sets to extend the progress of our schools and district, which will strengthen the vitality of our entire region."

Copeland-Dansby praised Ronan's tenure as superintendent and said the district has made tremendous progress under her leadership.
