A large sign reads "I am an American" hangs in a window of a store in Oakland, CA in March 1942. The store was closed following orders to persons of Japanese descent to evacuate from certain West Coast areas.

It was on this date in 1944 that the United States adopted the public proclamation 21 which declared that the Japanese-American evacuees would be returned to their homes in 1945.
