What started as a dream quickly took a sharp turn when the COVID-19 pandemic hit and students were sent home in March 2020 to quarantine after spending only seven months in college. And it's colored their entire time on campus.

By some estimates, chronic absenteeism doubled during the pandemic. Now, about halfway through the most "normal" school year since 2020, the situation hasn't improved in many places.

COVID-19 first entered the public consciousness about two years ago. It drew a lot of comparisons to another pandemic just over a hundred years earlier. WVXU's Bill Rinehart looks at the influenza wave that surfaced in 1918 and what lessons it has for us today.

In those two years, more than 2 million cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in Ohio, and thousands more are unconfirmed and unknown.
