Virginia Gov.-elect Glenn Youngkin arrives to speak at an election night party in Chantilly, Va., early Wednesday, Nov. 3, 2021, after he defeated Democrat Terry McAuliffe.

In this week's episode of Snollygoster, Ohio's politics podcast from WOSU, hosts Mike Thompson and Steve Brown discuss the election results and why some races get a little too much attention.

Extracting Meaning From An Off Year Election

The congressional election in Ohio went pretty much as expected with Democrat Shontel Brown winning up in Cleveland and Republican Mike Carey winning the more rural 15th District.

The overthrow of local school boards was underwhelming though there were some key victories by a few anti-mask candidates.

But nationally, pundits and politicians are making a lot of noise about Republican Glenn Youngkin's win in the governor's race in Virginia and the very close race in New Jersey (which has now been decided for incumbent Democrat Gov. Phil Murphy).

What do these races mean for the rest of the country? Not much or a whole lot depending on who you ask.

Snollygoster Of The Week

Last week before Halloween, Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost sent out an alert warning parents and kids about illegal and dangerous cannabis edibles that are packaged to look like well-known brands of snack foods and candy.

Well, the warning must have worked because there were no reported incidents of edibles in trick-or-treat bags. In fact, there have never been reported incidents of marijuana edibles in trick-or-treat bags anytime or anywhere in the state.
