Report: Franklin Co. suicides increased 10 percent in 2021
The Franklin County coroner's office released a report Friday showing a 10 percent increase in suicide deaths in the county in 2021.
158 Franklin County residents took their own lives last year, compared to 144 in 2020.
While suicide deaths among 15-24 age group led Franklin County in 2020, 25-34 year-olds were hit hardest last year.
Eighty percent of the county's suicide deaths were among men, an increase of 12 percent from 2020.
The most common suicide method in the county continued to be firearms. The coroner's office saw a big increase in gun-related suicides among women, jumping from 10 percent to 31 percent.
While the suicide death rate increased statewide last year, Franklin County saw a 20 percent lower rate compared to the state of Ohio in both 2020 and 2021.
