Franklin County Offers Tax Extensions To Furloughed Federal Workers
Franklin County is offering an extension on next week's property tax deadline for federal workers missing checks because of the government shutdown.
The county collects the taxes twice a year. Payment would typically be due January 22, but Franklin County Treasurer Cheryl Brooks says they want to ensure federal workers who are missing their income are not penalized if they're late.
"It's not going to be rubber stamp cookie cutter,” Brooks says. “Different people will have different situations that they themselves are facing. And we will work with them as much as possible within the law."
Brooks says the extension will depend on the length of the shutdown. She says property owners need to get documentation of lost wages in before 5 p.m. on January 22.
