Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith has provided more details about the job planned for Urban Meyer after his coaching tenure ends early next year.

Meyer’s latest contract extension includes a provision for the football coach to move into an administrative role with the athletic department after he stepped away from the sidelines. Smith says he has a rough outline for the position in his head, mixing external fundraising and professional development for coaches and players.

“He’ll help add to that effort,” Smith said in an interview with WOSU's All Sides With Ann Fisher. “So kind of a smorgasbord of different things, but we’ll have something together for him by the time he’s done on January 2.”

Smith warns there’s no guarantee Meyer will take the job, and he’s encouraged him to take some time off before diving into anything new.

"I think he really needs to take his space with his family, particularly Shelley, and you know really think through things.” Smith says. “My hope is that he comes back because I'd love to have him, but he may choose to do something else, I don't know."
