2 State EPA Workers Appeal Firings After Lead Found In Water

jurek d.

A former manager and employee are appealing their firings from the state Environmental Protection Agency after it said they mishandled the situation in a northeastern Ohio community where lead was found in drinking water.

Ken Baughman and his supervisor, Julie Spangler, were fired in February. The EPA said Baughman never made sure that the agency's field office in northeast Ohio received test results showing contamination in Sebring, about 60 miles southeast of Cleveland. The results showed dangerous levels of lead in tap water at some houses.

A union spokeswoman says Baughman's grievance hearing is planned next month. Spangler has filed an appeal with the state Personnel Board of Reviews.
