Golfing great Jack Nicklaus is among three people honored this year with the "Great Ohioans Award."

The others are the late U.S. Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart and industrialist and philanthropist John D. Rockefeller.

The award honors people who were born in Ohio or lived there at least five years and had noteworthy roles in events of lasting significance in history, at least 25 years ago.

Individuals and organizations submit nominations. The Capitol Square Review and Advisory Board announced the 2016 recipients Thursday.

Nicklaus now runs his own event on the PGA Tour, the Memorial Tournament in suburban Columbus.

Stewart was involved in Cincinnati politics before joining the high court. Rockefeller co-founded the Standard Oil Company as an Ohio partnership.

They join 39 others on the Great Ohioans list.
