Charges Dropped Against Man Fighting Courthouse Church Directory

An Athens man arrested for placing First Amendment stickers over a church directory on a county courthouse has been cleared of the criminal mischief charge against him. Sixty-nine-year-old Eliot Kalman was charged in October for attaching stickers with text of the First Amendment over the list of local places of worship on the Athens County Courthouse. He says the directory violates the constitutional separation of church and state. Kalman's trial began in Athens County Municipal Court Tuesday but ended swiftly when the judge agreed to have Kalman acquitted based on insufficient evidence. In November, Athens County Prosecutor Keller Blackburn suggested removing the directory so the county doesn't put itself at risk of liability. Commissioners say they're still deciding what to do with the directory.
