Cleveland Police Cadet Who Fired On Vehicle Is Not Sworn In

Cleveland's mayor has chosen not to swear in a police academy cadet who fired shots at a vehicle during a traffic stop while serving as a rookie officer in East Cleveland. Mayor Frank Jackson said he made the decision right before the graduation ceremony Monday, after learning that issues with the officer's record hadn't been fully addressed. The decision comes as investigators review a different Cleveland rookie officer's fatal shooting of a 12-year-old boy carrying a pellet gun near a recreation center. A police union leader said the union will challenge Jackson's decision about the cadet, who was listed in the graduation program. He'd been expected to be hired but closely watched during a probationary period. The Northeast Ohio Media Group reports he remains a recruit, for now.
