Ohio Ranks Near Top In Hazardous Chemical Spills

Ohio ranks high on the list of states with the most hazardous chemical spills on the nations’ rail lines and roadways. That’s according to the Dayton Daily News, which reports that since 2005 Ohio has had 256 serious incidents involving hazardous material releases during transport. That puts the state third in the nation behind only California and Texas. Those serious incidents in Ohio include one death from exposure to hazardous material and six deaths from the truck crashes involving the release of hazardous materials. They've also added up to $38 million in damages and the evacuations of 3,700 people. The newspaper says its review of federal safety statistics show that Ohio has had nearly 13,000 hazardous materials incidents overall during almost the past 10 years.
