Louisiana Inmates Who Killed Sunbury Man Plead Guilty

The Louisiana inmates who killed a Sunbury man two years ago pleaded guilty to kidnapping charges Monday in a Mississippi court. Darian Pierce and Ricky Wedgeworth pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in Jackson, Mississippi to one count each of kidnapping resulting in death. Following an escape from a work detail in Louisiana in March 2011, Pierce and Wedgeworth traveled to Vicksburg, Mississippi where they assaulted and kidnapped David Cupps from a hotel for his rental car. Cupps, from Sunbury, was there on a business trip. Cupps was killed. His body was found a few days later in Alabama. Federal public defender George Lucas, who represents Wedgeworth, said the escaped inmates did not intend to kill anyone. “Clearly they set out to commit a crime," Lucas said. "But it’s very unfortunate Mr. Cupps lost his life and that his family lost Mr. Cupps.â€? Pierce and Wedgeworth each face life in prison. Their sentencing is set for May 30.
