OH AG DeWine: Steubenville Rape Case Investigation On-Going

An online video which, graphically details an alleged rape Steubenville, Ohio, has fueled social media reaction and drawn national attention. WOSU reports the state attorney general’s office took over the case after a conflict of interest in the eastern Ohio city. The video that has spawned national outcry during the past couple of days was created last August after a 16-year-old girl was allegedly raped by at least two Steubenville High School athletes. In the video, an 18-year-old male mocks the alleged rape. “It is a despicable video. It is disgusting when you watch it," Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine said. DeWine's office took over the investigation in August because Jefferson County Prosecutor Jane Hanlin had a conflict of interest. DeWine said Hanlin knew someone who went to Stuebenville High School. The city, about 45 minutes east of Pittsburgh, prides itself on its winning football team. Two boys have been charged in the case. Both of them played on the Steubenville football team. The 16-year-olds go on trial next month in juvenile court for the alleged rape of the girl. One also is charged with illegal use of a minor in nudity oriented material. DeWine said the investigation is on-going. “So, until an investigation is closed, there’s always a possibility that additional charges might be filed, but I can’t tell you that. I can’t tell you one way or the other," he said. DeWine also would not say whether he is investigating whether some school staff or others may have tried to cover up the rape allegations.
