The Pros and Cons Of States Designing Health Care Exchanges

The Obama administration has extended the deadline for a key provision of the new federal health care law. Many states still have not publicly said if they’ll design their own health care exchange. Those are online marketplaces that help people pool together to increase their buying power. States had faced a Friday deadline to make an announcement, but now have until Dec. 14 to make a decision. Ohio insurance leaders have said their goal is to leave the state's exchange to the federal government, but they have not made an official announcement. For more on whether these marketplaces should be left to states or the federal government, WOSU's Steve Brown spoke with Joel Ario, the man credited with creating the blueprint for state-run exchanges.
