Shigella Cases Still Increasing In Columbus

Columbus health officials continue to struggle with a bacterial outbreak that’s sickened hundreds of children. Columbus officials say they haven't seen such a large number of Shigella cases in the past decade. The Columbus Public Department of Health Commissioner says many of this year’s 770 cases are linked to childcare centers and locations where young children are in close contact. Shigella bacteria cause an intestinal infection with flu-like symptoms. It’s especially contagious among children in diapers.
