Landlord Charged With Renting "Uninhabitable" Home

Columbus officials are taking action against the owner of a Columbus home where three people died during a Christmas Eve fire. Investigators believe a space heater near a mattress caused the blaze that killed 22-year-old Jerrica Francisco, her four-year-old son Deshawn, and her 33-year-old boyfriend Demetrius Chappell. Firefighters say the landlord of the Wisconsin Ave. home did not have a lease with the victims but knew they were in the house, even though the home was deemed uninhabitable two years ago and reportedly had not been reinspected, which is required before tenants can move back in. A complaint filed yesterday in Franklin County Municipal Court charges owner S. M. Vazirani with a housing code violation for a different occupied home that lacked heat.
