Ohio High Court Allows Vote on Slots
The Ohio Supreme Court says opponents of installing slots at racetracks are entitled to put the question before voters.
In a 6-1 ruling Monday, the high court ruled in favor of LetOhioVote.org. The group challenged the rejection of its petitions seeking to put a referendum on the ballot next fall.
Justices overrode language attached to the plan by state lawmakers that would have shielded the plan from such a vote. The court ordered Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner to accept the group's petitions.
Attorneys for Brunner had argued the video lottery terminals shouldn't be vulnerable to a vote because the money they would raise was used to balance the state budget. (Copyright 2009 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.)
