Ohio Legislators Move to Outlaw Plant Hallucinogenic

A plant that's become popular as a hallucinogenic drug is a step closer to becoming illegal in Ohio.

House members unanimously approved a measure to make salvia divinorum a controlled substance. Republican Rep. Thom Collier of Mount Vernon says it is inexpensive, easy to buy...and very dangerous.

Collier says Allen and Shelly Bush of Loudonville brought the issue to him after the death of their 12 year old son Drew. He was killed when a 13 year old friend shot him in the throat with a shot-gun.

The mother of the friend had reportedly given her son the herb, thinking it would help him sleep.

Five states have banned salvia, and 14 others are working on outlawing it.
