Dann sues tobacco company over ads

Ohio and five other states say R.J. Reynolds Tobacco has violated a nine-year-old ban on the use of cartoons in cigarette advertising.

In lawsuits being filed today, the states are targeting a section in the November issue of Rolling Stone that combines Camel cigarette ads and illustrations around the theme of independent rock music.

Pennsylvania Attorney General Tom Corbett says the nine-page spread of ads is filled with cartoons and flies in the face of the company's pledge to halt all tobacco marketing that would appeal to children.

A Reynolds spokesman told the New York Times last month that there was a clear difference between the Camel ads in the section and the illustrations.
