Strickland Denies Pay Raises to Hundreds of State Workers

Governor Strickland is continuing to pare down the state's finances.

Strickland announced Friday that he will deny pay increases,cost-of-living increases and merit raises for his agency directors. The governor says the state is looking for ways to be more efficient.

Earlier this year, Strickland sought to cut government costs by limiting the money state agencies spend on food, eventually lifting a freeze on meal expenditures and urging state employees to pack their lunch. The former Democratic congressman has also opted not to accept the state's health insurance benefit.

The salary freeze will extend to about 3400 state employees not covered by union agreements. (Copyright 2007 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.)
