Crews Work to Restore Power in Northland Area

A fire at a Columbus electric substation was brought under control after several hours when firefighters smothered the flames by dousing them with foam. Earlier, balls of fire and smoke billowed from the American Electric Power station on the city's north side following an explosion that occurred before 5:30 this morning.

A few nearby homes near the intersxection of Karl and Norma roads were evacuated as a precaution, and several schools in the area are closed because of power outages.

But power has begun to come back on for some of the estimated 32-thousand Columbus customers who were in the dark earlier.
