Real I-D Act stirs confusion among central Ohio immigrants
The American Demographic Survey shows the foreign-born population in Franklin County increased from 65,000 to 85,000 during the first three years of this decade.
All of the immigrants would be effected by the REAL ID act recently passed by the US House of Representatives.
The measure makes it easier to deport people, harder to seek political asylum, and creates a "secure" driver's license.
Republican congressman Pat Tiberi says the Real ID Act will limit issuance of driver's licenses to only those immigrants who have legal status.
But, immigration attorney Sam Shihab says the measure is causing more uncertainty in the immigrant community. He's skeptical about the need for the bill saying House Bill 418 fails to address homeland security intelligently.
