Kerry, in Ohio attacks Bush Social Security plan

Campaigning in Ohio, Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry accused President Bush Sunday of planning a surprise second-term effort to privatize Social Security.

Kerry delivered his message from the pulpit of the Mount Olivet Baptist Church in Columbus. He cited a report in The New York Times Magazine that quoted Bush as telling supporters that privatizing Social Security would be high on his second-term agenda.

Citing estimates from the Congressional Budget Office, Kerry said Bush's plan would mean benefit cuts for seniors of between 25 and 45%.

Republicans denied Kerry's charges as scare tactics with little more than two weeks remaining in a tight election. WOSU's Tamara Keith traveled with Kerry for part of the weekend. Click the Listen icon to hear her report.
