Columbus middle school grieves student hit by car

Johnson Park Middle School principal Charmain Kinker says a "crisis" team is on hand Monday at the school to help grieving students. 12- year-old Jarrod Payne was killed Friday afteroon as he tried to cross Livingston Avenue at Waverly.

Kinker says the counselors and other staff will provide some students "more shoulders to cry on." Although the new school year is less than two weeks old, Kinker says Jarrod was the second Johnson park student to be hit by a car on the way to and from school. Earlier, a boy was hit on Barnett Street. He recovered from his injuries.

Funeral services are scheduled Wednesday for Jarrod. His classmates will be allowed to attend. Johnson park middle school teaches 6th, 7th, and 8th graders and has an enrollment of 7-hundred.

No charges have been filed in Jarrod's death. Investigating officers say alcohol might have be a contributing factor.
