Westminster Kennel Club To Crown Best In Show

RACHEL MARTIN, HOST:

The 143rd Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show ends tonight at New York's Madison Square Garden. Competition has been rough.

STEVE INSKEEP, HOST:

Was that a pun?

MARTIN: Maybe. Four dogs moved on to the final round.

UNIDENTIFIED PERSON #1: Havanese.

UNIDENTIFIED PERSON #2: It's the Havanese.

UNIDENTIFIED PERSON #1: The Havanese has it.

(APPLAUSE)

UNIDENTIFIED PERSON #3: Stiff.

UNIDENTIFIED PERSON #2: Yay.

UNIDENTIFIED PERSON #1: Well done.

UNIDENTIFIED PERSON #2: That bouvier is going to be one.

INSKEEP: And then there's this fan favorite, who was an underdog.

UNIDENTIFIED PERSON #2: Let's hear it for the dachshund.

UNIDENTIFIED PERSON #1: Yes.

UNIDENTIFIED PERSON #4: First to the long-haired dogs.

UNIDENTIFIED PERSON #2: Yes.

UNIDENTIFIED PERSON #1: Right.

INSKEEP: A long-haired dachshund named Burns won the hound group and is in the final round. A best in show prize would be a first for that breed.

MARTIN: It would also expand the variety of Westminster winners. Six different kinds of dogs have had their representative named best in show the last six years. The top dog is crowned tonight. Transcript provided by NPR, Copyright NPR.
