The American Sound
Relish the warm days of summer this month on The American Sound. Join host Jennifer Hambrick for The American Sound, Saturday evenings at 6pm and Tuesdays at 7pm on Classical 101.

Highlights for The American Sound in July include:

  • July 3/6 – Meet the softer side of the bad boy of classical music. George Antheil’s Valentine Waltzes are a trip through the joy and heartache of love, one sweeping waltz at a time.
  • July 10/13 – In a lush, blues-inflected musical language, this symphony portrays what the composer called the “sons of the soil.” Hear William Grant Still’s “Afro-American” Symphony.
  • July 17/20 From its achingly lyrical beginning to its quicksilver finale, Samuel Barber’s Violin Concerto is a melting pot of passionate expression and fiery virtuosity.
  • July 24/27 – It’s a fresh take on one of America’s best-loved traditional songs. James Cohn’s Variations on The Wayfaring Stranger are a musical tribute to two people who helped the composer through part of his life’s journey.
  • July 31/August 3 – The spirit of the Appalachians in the sounds of a symphony, “To the Appalachian Mountains” by Alan Hovhaness.

Symphony Showcase
This month, Symphony Showcase features four of the greatest symphonies from the most popular Russian composer of all time. Join Kent Teeters Sundays at 6pm and Thursdays at 7 pm.

Highlights for Symphony Showcase in July include:

  • July 4/8 – Tchaikovsky’s powerful Symphony No. 4 and the popular 1812 Overture, both performed by the Philharmonia Orchestra with conductor Riccardo Muti
  • July 11/15 – The always electric Gustavo Dudamel leads the Simon Bolivar Youth Symphony in Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5 and Eiji Oue and the Minnesota Orchestra offer the lush Andante Cantabile
  • July 18/22 –Tchaikovsky’s Marche slave with the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Symphony No. 6 “Pathetique” with Vladimir Jurowski and the London Philharmonic
  • July 25/29 –Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 2 “Little Russian” with the Philharmonia Orchestra and conductor Riccardo Muti. And Tchaikovsky pays tribute to a favorite composer—his Orchestra Suite No. 4 “Mozartiana.”
