The Littlest Musicians at This Weekend's Annual Independents' Day Festival
You may have heard of Columbus's annual Indepedents' Day Festival in Downtown/Franklinton. The festival features artists, artisans, musicians, and community organizers working together to bring all sorts of arts and oddities to visitors. (Yep, the name of the festival is really spelled that way!)
This year promises a new musical talent that's a little younger than usual; The Columbus Children's Choir and Starlings Chorus.
Throughout the school year, dedicated choral directors from the CCC work with Columbus City Schools' music teachers to provide music enrichment for students in the 6th-8th grades at Starling PK-8 in Franklinton. This ongoing program provides enrichment in music and the opportunity for community performances with their peers.
"CCC strives to provide an inclusive musical landscape for all children and selects repertoire that reflects a commitment to cultural diversity and includes everything from Iroquois lullabies to Mozart arias. Singers perform at culturally significant events such as the annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday Breakfast. These culturally inclusive performances expose children to cross-sections of the community, while a culturally diverse repertoire exposes them to the world."
All told, the CCC serves around 500 students in various ensembles designed with their age and musical literacy level in mind. Students participate in sight-reading and music theory preparation as well as performances around town and abroad.
This weekend's performance will feature around 50 young singers from a the CCC and Starlings Choir. Be sure to show your support for this program and these young musicians by visiting their performance Sunday, September 18th at 12:00-12:30pm at the "Retropolis Stage" at the Independents’ Day Festival in Franklinton, Town St. & McDowell St. Admission is free and the entire event is family friendly.
Be sure to stay tuned for more news on the CCC's concert season and exciting partnership lined up overseas next July!
