This Saturday evening at 7 on Fretworks, I'll have Japanese guitarist Kazuhito Yamashita and the Tokyo String Quartet for their recording of the Guitar Quintet No. 4 in D by Luigi Boccherini. The Italian born Boccherini lived a good portion of his life in Spain and died in Madrid in 1805. This is the quintet that concludes with the famous "Fandango" with castanets and that evokes the spirit of that country so well. Mandolin virtuoso Avi Avital is back this week with another selection from his CD "Between Worlds." The Seven Spanish Folk Songs by Manuel de Falla feature mandolin, guitar, harp, cello, double bass, and percussion in this arrangement. Guitarist Marcin Dylla will play Variations on a theme of Scriabin by Alexandre Tansman, and Angel Romero will be the soloist in an arrangement of the Violin Concerto in E of Antonio Vivaldi with the Academy of St. Martin-in-the-fields. Join me here on Classical 101 for Fretworks just an hour before our new Program Concierto that celebrates the Latin contributions to classical music, both in English and Spanish, every Saturday 8 to 10 p.m. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mNdlWXlTAK8
