Women have been around since the dawn of humankind, but it has only been since the establishment of, first, Women's History week, and later, Women's History Month in the 1980s that women's contributions have been formally recognized in the United States with their own designated period of reflection. Again this year, and by presidential proclamation, March is Women's History Month in America. And on Saturday evenings in March on The American Sound, I am proud to showcase music by some of America's best contemporary composers - who also happen to be women. This Saturday at 6 p.m. tune in to hear selections from Maria Schneider's Grammy Award-winning  Winter Morning Walks. A song cycle set to poetry of U.S. Poet Laureate Ted Kooser, Schneider's Winter Morning Walks has one foot in the world of jazz, the other foot in the world of classical music - and a heart for fleeting beauty and the poignancy of impermanence. Soprano Dawn Upshaw and the Australian Chamber Orchestra give voice to Schneider's music in their award-winning recording. Jennifer Hambrick unites her extensive backgrounds in the arts and media and her deep roots in Columbus to bring inspiring music to central Ohio as Classical 101’s midday host. Jennifer performed with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the Civic Orchestra of Chicago before earning a Ph.D. in musicology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
