This week on Fretworks, we have one of the great early 19th century guitar concertos, Mauro Giuliani's Guitar Concerto in A, Op. 30. This work from around 1812 is in Late Classical/Early Romantic style and is a joy to hear. Our recording goes back a few years to around 1987 and features the fine Japanese guitarist Kazuhito Yamashita with the Leos Janacek Chamber Orchestra. Columbus native and world-famous lutenist Paul O'Dette will play some music of Shakespeare contemporary, John Dowland from one of O'Dette's outstanding series of recordings on the Harmonia Mundi label. The New Pro Arte Guitar Quartet will have music of Spanish composer Isaac Albeniz. The pieces they'll play from the Suite Espanola were originally composed for the piano but are better known to many in their guitar arrangements, in this case for three guitars. We'll also hear Slava Grigoryan, an Australian classical guitarist of Armenian heritage. From his 1995 Sony Classical CD, we have the Guitar Sonatina by another Spanish composer, Federico Moreno Torroba, who in the 1020's was responsible helping expand the repertoire for the classical guitar. Join me Saturday evening at 7 for Fretworks on Classical 101.
