Mandolin Wizard Chris Thile Plays Bach on Fretworks

Our next Fretworks broadcast on Saturday evening at 7 on Classical 101 will feature an interesting mix of sounds, including Bach played on a mandolin and part of a symphony for guitar and orchestra by Alan Hovhaness. The mandolin virtuoso Chris Thile began playing in the band Nickel Creek when he was 8 years old. In his early 20's, he's pushed musical boundaries with Punch Brothers.  Now he's playing and recording Johann Sebastian Bach. Chris Thile's new album features Violin Sonatas and Partitas of Bach arranged for mandolin.  These are challenging works at the summit of the repertoire for any very good violinist.  We'll hear Thile's recording of the Sonata in G minor on Saturday's program. Other music you can enjoy will include part of Alan Hovhaness's Symphony No. 39 for Guitar and Orchestra from 1979.  Guitarist Eliot Fisk will have a sonata by Domenico Scarlatti.  And for the holidays, we'll hear selections from The Nutcracker by Tchaikovsky with John Stover, and Brandon Yip, with members of the San Fransisco Guitar Quartet will play Noel for 4 Guitars by Robert Mayeur. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wAUoI49Ndmk
