Minnesota Orchestra Leaders Willing to Sacrifice Season

What started as a not-unusual situation is rapidly approaching the unthinkable, as leaders of the Minnesota Orchestra seem prepared not only to delay the start of the 2013-2014 season in their brand-new home, but also to give up this season's Carnegie Hall appearance and lose vaunted conductor Osmo Vänskä.

“Osmo may have to leave,â€? Richard Davis, chairman of the orchestra’s negotiating team, said in a meeting Tuesday with the Star Tribune editorial board. “The board is resolved to know that that is a risk. Carnegie, the opening of the hall. All three may have to fall.â€?

While musical colleagues in the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra prepare to launch their season in the aftermath of a successful contract agreement, the standoff continues across town.  One of America's most highly respected orchestras seems to some to be in danger of disappearing.
