A Trio by Molino and a Concerto by Villa-Lobos on Fretworks

Our next Fretworks broadcast Saturday evening at 7 on Classical 101 will include solo, trio, and concerto performances. This week's program for music of the classical guitar will feature works from Spain, Italy, and Brazil. Brent Poe McCabe and Christopher Parkening will be the guitarists for Spanish music.  We'll hear the famous Asturias by Issac Albeniz.  Even though it was written for the piano, it sounds tailor-made for the guitar.  Also, there will be a suite of traditional Catalan tunes that were arranged by Andres Segovia and Miguel Llobet. We venture to Italy in the early 19th century for music of Francesco Molino for his Trio for Flute, Viola and Guitar.  He traveled to Spain to give concerts and settled in Paris in 1820  This is from a world-premier recording of chamber works by Molino featuring three Scandinavian artists, including guitarist Jan Sommer. We're on to Brazil for the Guitar Concerto of Heitor Villa-Lobos.  It was written in 1951 and is dedicated to Andres Segovia.  We're going to hear a performance all the way from Finland with guitarist Timo Korhonen and the Finnish Radio Symphony. Above is a bit of the Villa-Lobos Concerto with Julian Bream.
