2013 BBC Cardiff Singer Of The World Is An American
Mezzo-soprano Jamie Barton has won the top prize in the 2013 BBC Cardiff Singer of the World Competition, which concluded last week in that city. Formed in 1983, the competition capitalizes on the Welsh love of singing.Â Past winners include Bryn Terfel, Dimitri Hvorostovsky, Nicole Cabell,Â and Leah Crocetto. Chinese tenor Li Yi was also a finalist this year.Â He won the top prize in the 2012 Opera Columbus Irma M Cooper Vocal Competition. Barton is from Georgia and is a graduate of Indiana University. She was featured in the 2007 film The Audition which was a behind the scenes look at the annual Metropolitan Opera Auditions.
