Music from North America on Next Fretworks

On the next Fretworks broadcast this Saturday evening at 7 pm, we conclude our month-long geographical excursion for International Guitar Month with music from North America. We'll have music of American composers Andrew York, Aaron Copland, Alan Hovhaness and Terry Riley.  In an honorary gesture, Czech composer Antonin Dvorak, who spent three very productive years in the United States, will be featured with a movement from his American String Quartet arranged for mandolin ensemble. The L.A. Guitar Quartet will be back on this Saturday's program along with David Leisner, Lynn Harting-Ware, the Modern Mandolin Quartet, and Canadian guitarist Jeffrey McFadden. In what is probably the least familiar music, Leisner will be the soloist in a movement from the large-scale Guitar Concerto of Alan Hovhaness from 1979, and McFadden will be accompanied by flutist Alexandra Hawley for Cancion Desierto by Terry Riley, long associated with the minimalist school of composition.
