Guitars Plus Flute and Soprano on Next Fretworks Saturday Evening

We have a couple of dynamic duos on the next Fretworks Saturday evening at 7pm.  Flutist James Galway will be back with guitarist Kazuhito Yamashita, and Soprano Kathleen Battle will be accompanied by Christopher Parkening. Mauro Giuliani, who was friends with Beethoven, was one of the most important guitarist/composers of the early 19th century in Europe, and his Grand Duo Concertant in A for Flute and Guitar is a truly grand work for that combination.  There's certainly no one grander to play it than flutist James Galway, who will perform it with the very accomplished Japanese guitarist Kazuhito Yamashita. Here is the lovely Andante molto sostenuto from that work: http://youtu.be/zlHQvSm2Ifg Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos wrote his nine Bachianas brasilieras between 1930 and 1945.  They comprise a fascinating set of pieces for different combinations of instruments and combine the influences of native Brazilian music with the musical tradition of European Baroque music, hence the title. Bachianas brasileiras No. 5 has always been the most popular of the set and was originally scored for soprano and cellos.  We're going to hear the Aria from this haunting and mesmerizing music performed by soprano Kathleen Battle with guitarist Christopher Parkening from a very fine collaboration recorded in the 1980s by EMI, called The Pleasures of Their Company.
