Elliot Carter's music was not for everyone. Â He was fine with that, however, saying music has always been way ahead of public taste.
"You know, when I was growing up in Boston, people used to say the Exit signs in Symphony Hall meant âthis way in case of Brahms,â? Carter said in an interview with Norman Lebrecht some 30 years ago.
More recently, Carter spoke with cellist Alisa Weilerstein, who was working on a piece Carter wrote for Yo Yo Ma. Â During that interview, she offered to play some of it for him.
