Music for the Golden Gate: May 27 Is Frisco Day on Classical 101

On May 28, 1937, the city of San Francisco inaugurated an orange vermilion suspension bridge spanning the azure waters of San Francisco Bay. The San Francisco Chronicle called it a “35 million dollar steel harp,â€? and the musical metaphor has proven prescient: over the next 75 years San Francisco would become one of the most vibrant classical music centers of the world. Join me Sunday, May 27, 10 a.m. - 1 p.m., for a special program of music celebrating the 75th anniversary of the opening of the Golden Gate Bridge. We’ll hear performances by some of San Francisco’s world-renowned classical music ensembles, including the Grammy Award-winning male chorus Chanticleer and the San Francisco Symphony, which celebrates its 100th anniversary this season. We’ll also hear performances by classical music greats - like violinist Isaac Stern -who called Frisco home, and music inspired by the city’s history and natural beauty. Tune in Sunday, May 27th, 10 a.m. - 1 p.m., for San Francisco Day on Classical 101!
