Here's what's going on in the arts over WOSU's listening area, just in October. And this is a partial list, I'm sure. *= a performance to be heard over WOSU 89-7. Go get 'em September 29-October 24 CATCO world premiere of The Last Smoker 00000178-6a23-ddab-a97a-6a3b5b850000 in America, CATCO's first off-Broadway bound musical. Riffe Center October 2010 Oct 1 and 2*: The Columbus Symphony opened its 60th anniversary season at the Ohio Theater. Good, cheering crowds. Gunter Herbig conducted an all Beethoven program. The Violin Concerto was played by the sensation Augustin Hadelich. The crowd fell in love with him. Oct. 1 8 PM* Chanticleer, the San Francisco based male choir was presented by Chamber Music Columbus in the Southern Theater Oct. 2*Pomerium a fourteen voice a capella choir conducted by Alexander Blachly presented Musica Vaticana, with selections by Josquin, DuFay, deWert, Gesualdo and Palestrina at St. Joseph Cathedral. Sensational. Don't believe me? [youtube O-25R_SaDao 490 344] Oct 1-9 Ballet Met Requiem with music by Mozart. Riffe Center, Capital Theater. On October 5 at 10 a.m. the Columbus Symphony holds a press conference to introduce its new music director. Stay tuned. Oct. 7 and 7 Opera Columbus presents music by Kurt Weill From Berlin 00000178-6a23-ddab-a97a-6a3b5b860000 to Broadway a review staged by Tim Veach of the Columbus Dance Theater at the magnificent newly restored Lincoln Theater Oct. 9 1.30 PM The Metropolitan Opera's live in HD season begins with a live relay from the Met of Wagner's Das Rheingold. James Levine conducts the new staging by the Cirque du soleil's Robert Lepage. This is selling out everywhere. I never remember a time when Das Rheingold, the first of Wagner's Ring operas was hot! hot! hot! Bryn Terfel and Stephanie Blythe are Wotan and Fricka, with a break out performance by bass Eric Owens as Alberich. [youtube TDUUJzlma74 490 344] Oct. 9 8 PM* and 10 3 PM Columbus Symphony at the Ohio Theater. Plus Debussy's La mer, a sure fire way for a fine orchestra to distinguish itself, and Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade-a tuneful, high calorie take on the Arabian nights. Oct. 12 8 PM* Early Music in Columbus presents Apollo's Fire, the Cleveland based baroque ensemble in Monteverdi's great Vespers of 1610 (Vespers of the Blessed Virgin) in Central Ohio's only 400th anniversary performance of this magnificent work. Jeanette Sorrell conducts.  At Mees Hall, Capital University. [youtube BalSvIsRqr8 490 344] October 23 12 noon Metropolitan Opera live in HD presents a new production of Mussorgsky's Boris Godunov conducted by Valery Gergiev and staged by Stephen Wadsworth, with Rene Pape October 22 and 23* 8PM Columbus Symphony Jean-Marie Zeitouni conducts an all baroque program including Handel's Music for the Royal Fireworks. Ohio Theater. October 23 8 PM* Chamber Music Columbus presents Brazilian pianist Arnaldo Cohen in music by Bach, Chopin, Ernesto Nazareth and more. Southern Theater October 24 3 PM* New Albany Symphony Luis Biava conducts Mahler's Symphony 1,  plus the Prokofiev Violin Concerto with Chee-Yun. Opening of the NASO's Third season. Don't forget, you can hear the programs marked * on WOSU 89-7. All Saturday night Columbus symphony classical series programs are broadcast live at 8 PM.
